Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi, a composer of enduring brilliance and vast erudition, is believed to have lived approximately between 1700-1765. His multifaceted creations are a testament to his extensive knowledge and exemplary craftsmanship. Proficient in melody, form, rhythm, meter, poetry, dance, drama, epics, mythology, cultural history, and geography in both Sanskrit and Tamil, Venkata Kavi's talent transcends boundaries.

In the treatise Sangita Ratnakara by Sarangadeva (1210-1247), there are around 30 qualities listed that composers should embody. These include mastery of melody, rhythm, meter, rhyme, as well as a grasp of drama, poetry, characterization, and various other facets. Venkata Kavi stands out as a rare figure in Indian music who embodies many of these essential qualities.

On a global scale, Venkata Kavi's contributions to Eastern music are comparable to the impact made by his Western contemporaries Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) on Western music development.
